About
Hi, I'm Matt. I build AI software for small businesses.
I'm the founder of Fat Bear Development. I'm based in Lehi, Utah, and work with businesses anywhere.
My story
From painting houses to building AI.
I started my first business at 17: interior house painting. It taught me how to quote a job, keep a customer happy, and get paid. It also taught me how much of running a business is admin work that has nothing to do with the actual job.
After that I spent about five years in product and business systems at insurance and fintech companies. Today I work as an Agile Product Owner, which means my job is figuring out what a business really needs and making sure the right thing gets built. Along the way I earned my MBA.
Now I build AI-powered software, both for my own products and for clients. I get to combine the two things I know best: how small businesses actually run, and how to turn a messy process into software that works.
I also host the Lurking AI Podcast, where I interview tech founders, AI-powered marketers, and heads of VC funds. And I write the Lurking AI newsletter, which covers trending AI topics and the reality of implementing AI in a business.
Why “Fat Bear”?
Every fall, the brown bears of Katmai National Park feast on salmon to get ready for winter, and Fat Bear Week celebrates the ones who ate best. A fat bear isn't lazy. It's prepared. That's what I want for my clients: a business that's eating good, with reserves built up for whatever season comes next.

I think like a product owner. I start by learning how your business works and where time and money are leaking. We only build what solves a real problem.

Before any work starts, you get a written plan: what I'll build, what it costs, and when it will be done. No open-ended hourly bills.
